Please note that floor tiles can be used on walls however wall tiles are not suitable to be used on floors due to their density and strength.
Ceramic tiles can be used for both internal and external purposes. Ceramic tiles are available in a huge range of colours to suit your home, they are made from clay and are then baked in a Kiln.
These tiles are all cushioned edges and also come in glazed porcelain.
Porcelain & Glazed Porcelain
Porcelain Tiles are very popular due to their size and finish, they all come with rectified edges and are a high end product.
Porcelain Tiles are known as a vitrified tile and are the highest grade of tile you can purchase, extremely strong and durable, they are also nonporous which is impervious to liquid.
Glazed Porcelain tiles are also available which are also very strong however can come in a cushioned / Pressed edge which can assist with lowering the expense.
These tiles have used more purified clays to allow for stronger density.
Rectified Tiles
Rectified meaning corrected and refined they are cut after firing (baking) to ensure their size and shape is perfect.
Tiles that have been rectified can be laid closer together with smaller grout joints, giving them a sleeker and more modern look.
Rectified tiles also remove any rounded or ‘cushion’ edges that may be on the tiles, further enhancing their contemporary look.

Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain tiles are made from porcelain clay that has been fired at high heat during the manufacturing process. Porcelain tiles are hardwearing tiles suitable to a range of uses including pools are they are less porous than ceramic tiles. Porcelain tiles are available in a range of finishes including Glazed, Matte, Honed, Polished, Lappatto & External. They can be Rectified or Non-rectified.
Glazed – A Glazed porcelain tile is a porcelain biscuit with a layer of glaze over the top, applied during the manufacturing process. This gives the tiles a high-gloss appearance. Glazed porcelain tiles do not require any further sealing as the Glaze in non-porous.
Matte – Matte finish Porcelain tiles are similar to Glazed Porcelain tiles, in that they are a porcelain biscuit with a matte finish glaze over the top. Matte finish Porcelain tiles do not require any further sealing as the glaze in non-porous.
Honed – Honed Porcelain tiles are an unglazed tile. The surface of the tile has been ground down to a smooth finish to emit a satin/ matte finish. Honed tiles require sealing in external & wet areas as they will absorb moisture.
Polished – Polished Porcelain tiles are an unglazed tile. The surface of the tile has been polished to emit a gloss/ shiny finish. Polished tiles require sealing in external & wet areas as they will absorb moisture.
Lappatto – Originally starting as an external tile, Lappatto finish tiles are ground down until smooth to give a satin like, semi-reflective finish. Lappatto tiles do not require sealing as they are a glazed tile.
External – External Porcelain tiles are textured tiles with a P4 or P5 slip rating often used commercially or outdoors. Most External Porcelain tiles are vitrified and do not require sealing.
Ceramic Tiles
A ceramic tile is a tile made from a clay biscuit with a glaze over the top, fired at a high heat during the manufacturing process. They are typically softer and more porous than porcelain tiles but are still hardwearing. Ceramic tiles are generally cushion-edged/ non-rectified and do not require sealing as the glaze is non-porous. Ceramic tiles are available in a range of finishes including Matte, Gloss, Lappatto & External.
Matte – Matte finish Ceramic tiles are a ceramic biscuit with a matte glaze over the top to achieve a P2 or P3 slip rating.
Gloss – Gloss finish Ceramic tiles are a ceramic biscuit with a Gloss glaze over to top.
Lappatto – Originally starting as an external tile, Lappatto finish tiles are ground down until smooth to give a satin like, semi-reflective finish.
External – External Ceramic tiles are textured tiles with a P4 or P5 slip rating often used outdoors.
Vitrified
Vitrified tiles are a porcelain tile with no glaze, instead they are manufactured with natural clays & stone to achieve the colour. This way, the colour is present through the entire biscuit of the tile. Vitrified tiles are the least porous of tiles making them perfect for commercial use, pools, wet areas & high traffic areas such as main floors. Vitrified tiles are generally rectified and come in a range of finishes including Matt, Lappatto & External.
Rectified vs Non-Rectified Tiles:
Non-rectified or cushion-edged tiles can be ceramic or porcelain and are baked in a kiln at extremely high temperatures during the manufacturing process. At the completion of this process, the tiles can vary in size up to 4mm due to heat not being dispersed evenly throughout the kiln. Hence why there are different calibrations within batches of non-rectified tiles. Within one calibration, tile size can vary up to 2.25mm by Australian Standards. This means a 450×450 tile could have a 448.75mm tile and a 451mm tile within the same batch.
A rectified tile can be ceramic or porcelain, often they are porcelain. Just like non-rectified tiles they are baked in a kiln at extremely high temperatures during the manufacturing process. To avoid sizing issues like non-rectified tiles, rectified tiles are cut at the end of the kiln process to achieve a straight edge which creates perfect sizing throughout the entire batch.
